Is bamboo flooring waterproof?

No — standard bamboo flooring is not waterproof. Bamboo is a grass with a fibrous, porous structure that readily absorbs moisture. Prolonged exposure to rain, standing water, or high humidity causes it to swell, warp, and eventually crack. This applies to all untreated bamboo, including the popular carbonised and horizontal-grain boards sold for indoor use.

However, water resistance is a different story. Several manufacturing treatments dramatically improve bamboo's ability to shed water and resist moisture ingress:

• Strand-woven bamboo — fibres are compressed under extreme heat and pressure with resin binders, creating a density up to 3× harder than red oak. This process also closes most of the natural pores, making it far more moisture-resistant than standard bamboo.
• Thermal modification — bamboo is kiln-heated to 160–220 °C in a low-oxygen environment. This process removes the sugars and starches that attract mould and reduces the wood's ability to absorb water by up to 50%.
• Surface sealants — oil-based or polyurethane sealants applied every 1–3 years provide a protective film that repels surface water. Without reapplication, this protection degrades.

Even treated boards should not be used in areas of constant standing water or in climates with over 85% average humidity year-round. In those conditions, composite decking or natural stone are more appropriate choices.

Can bamboo flooring actually be used outside?

Yes — but only specific types, and only in the right conditions. The key distinction is between indoor bamboo flooring repurposed outdoors (a mistake that leads to rapid failure) and bamboo decking products specifically engineered for outdoor use.

Brands such as MOSO, Cali Bamboo, and EcoChoice produce outdoor-rated bamboo decking that has been independently tested to ASTM and EN standards for slip resistance, UV stability, and moisture absorption. When purchasing, look for a board that explicitly states "outdoor" or "decking" use — not general-purpose flooring adapted for outside.

How long does outdoor bamboo flooring last?

Lifespan depends almost entirely on three factors: product quality, installation method, and maintenance consistency.

Well-installed, properly maintained strand-woven bamboo decking typically lasts 15–25 years, which is comparable to ipe or teak and significantly longer than pressure-treated pine (10–15 years). Thermally modified bamboo decking can exceed 25 years with minimal upkeep.

Lifespan is shortened by:

• Skipping the recommended 5–10 mm expansion gaps between boards (traps moisture, causes buckling)
• Installing over solid concrete without a drainage sub-frame (pooling water underneath accelerates decay from below)
• Failing to re-seal every 1–2 years in high-UV or rainy climates
• Using incompatible stainless-steel-free fasteners (iron fasteners cause tannin staining and corrosion)

In a UK or Pacific Northwest climate — moderate rainfall, indirect sunlight — annual oiling and a quality product routinely deliver 20+ year lifespans. In harsher Australian or Florida sun, more frequent UV-protective sealant application is needed.

Does bamboo flooring wear well outdoors?

Strand-woven bamboo is one of the hardest commercially available flooring materials. It scores between 3,000 and 5,000 lbf on the Janka hardness scale — compared to 1,380 lbf for white oak and 2,200 lbf for hickory. This hardness translates directly into resistance to scratches, dents, and heavy foot traffic.

In outdoor settings, the relevant wear concerns are:

• Surface scratching — strand-woven bamboo resists scratching from furniture legs and foot traffic better than most softwoods used in decking. Fine scratches can be lightly sanded and re-oiled.
• UV fading — like most wood products, bamboo will silver-grey over time if untreated. UV-stabilised oil or decking stain prevents this. Some homeowners prefer the natural grey patina; others apply a pigmented oil annually to maintain the original tone.
• Mould and mildew — thermally modified bamboo has significantly lower mould susceptibility because heat treatment removes fermentable sugars. Strand-woven bamboo is denser and less prone to surface mould than open-grain woods, but still benefits from an annual clean with a diluted deck-wash solution.
• Slip resistance — when wet, smooth-finished bamboo can be slippery. Choose a board with a brushed or grooved surface finish, rated R11 or above for wet outdoor areas.

Not all products labelled "bamboo decking" are equal. Use this checklist before purchasing:

• Density: Look for strand-woven boards with a density of at least 1,100 kg/m³ (standard indoor bamboo is around 700 kg/m³).
• Finish: Brushed or grooved profiles provide better grip and are easier to re-coat than smooth profiles.
• Certification: FSC or PEFC certification confirms responsibly sourced bamboo. ISO 22157 testing data for moisture content and bending strength is a mark of a serious manufacturer.
• Warranty: Reputable outdoor bamboo brands offer 10–25 year structural warranties. Short warranties (under 5 years) are a red flag for outdoor-rated products.
• Fastener system: Hidden clip systems with stainless-steel fasteners extend lifespan and produce a cleaner surface than face-screwed boards.
